Bovey Lee Research

I am a cut paper artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Born in Hong Kong and practicing Chinese calligraphy since the age of ten, I studied painting and drawing in my formative years and completed my BA degree in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In 1993, I came to the United States as a painter and earned my first Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequently, I earned a second MFA in computer graphics and interactive media at Pratt Institute in New York. In 2000, I relocated to Pittsburgh where I created my first cut paper work in 2005.

My works have been exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, Nevada; Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York;  Museum Bellerive, Zurich, Switzerland; National Glass Centre, Sunderland, UK; Museum of Fine Arts, Beijing, China; Fukuoka Museum of Art, Japan; Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong; Museum Rijswijk, The Netherlands; among others.

List of grimm fairytales

The first volume of the first edition was published, containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1814. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by Robert Leinweber.
The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions – such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel (shown in original Grimm stories as Hansel and Grethel) to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references—such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naïvely revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her stepmother—but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased.

501 Evaluation

Although this module has been long and i have often put it to one side, I think that I have really learnt a lot from it, In terms of my time management and organisational skills as well as the actual content of the lectures and seminars. I have really found the Lectures interesting this year and I know I will find my lecture not very helpful when coming to write my dissertation.

When it came to writing my essay I really struggled at the beginning, I began by looking at  subcultures and subcultural theory, this then led me on to looking at graffiti, i wanted to look at the link between graffiti and crime as well as the subcultures which are form often as a result of Gangs and Graffiti. I think if i were to write my essay agin i would focus more on Graffiti and less on Subcultural theory as I have become particular interested in the link between crime and Graffiti. In comparison between my essay last year and my essay this year I think I have been much more focused I'm my area of study, After Visiting Berlin in April I really started to become interested in the history behind the east side gallery and events linking to more current times. I think including Graffiti in my essay really helped me to stay interested and focused on the final outcome of my essay.

I have overall really enjoyed the Theory and Practice 2 Module, I focused on Graffiti and the discussion as to wether it is a form or art or wether is is a crime and should e punished, i found this very interesting to look at and even managed to use all my own photography in my publication. I really enjoyed Editing my photos and putting them into a layout whited worked well visually. My Publication was designed to go alongside a made up exhibition which would be based in Berlin, I have Focused more on the concept rather than the actually design of the Exhibition, And therefore I Have produced promotion ad extra products for the exhibition. Overall I think the concept works well, but I do think that I could have pushed the concept further.

When I went to get my publication printed in the digital dungeon, For some reason in deign wouldn't print it the way it was set up, so instead of having a A3 double page spread which would fold down the enter i have to rethink the layout of my publication quickly. I decided that i would have to print my double page speeds on a single sheet of A4 not double sided, Initially this was very frustrating, however when putting the publication togetherI released I could still make it look visually pleasing.
So i added tracing paper with graffiti style patterns and my own Illustrations on the pages with nothing on them, i then sewed the pages together with coloured thread, I wanted this to look like Yarn Bombing, another style of Graffiti in the form or thread or string.

I have learnt many new skills Through doing this Module, as it is a long module i think i have mange my time much better than i did in 401, attending all the seminars and lectures has given me an inside into academic writing and hopefully has prepared me for the academic writing and research I will be doing next year in preparation for my dissertation. Overall I have really enjoyed this module and the fact i have been working to my own time limits and my own style or working, I do think that if i have been more organised i could of produce more work to a similar standard and pushed my idea further in order to extend the idea of the exhibition further.

Things I would change…..

I would start researching much earlier, as once i start reading into a subject I nearly always get carrier away and the reading aspect tends to take much  longer than I predict.
recording where and when I have researched, in terms of referencing I would record everything I read as soon as  I read it.
I would Make sure i look into a range of different research areas before choosing one, as when it came to writing my essay this time I wanted to change my idea mid essay.
I would Try to organise my time better, start a brief as soon as i get it rather than putting it of for days then releasing it needs to be done.

Extra products

Below is the poster which I produced as extra material to go with my publication. The poster I produced is for a made up exhibition which would be in berlin Germany and would be based on Graffiti and the Berlin wall, The exhibition itself would look in detail at wether graffiti should be perceived as art or as Crime. I wanted the Exhibition to be in berlin as i thought it would be more relevant and there would be more to look at as it could be link to past events linking to the political and historical aspect of the Berlin wall. The illustrations which i have done for the promotional side of the berlin wall are pretty basic and simple as I wanted the type to have more impact and therefore didn't want the illustration to take one the image.

I have also applied the logo to bags, t shirts, and jumpers which could be worn by staff of bought by exhibitors, I have also done tags so that any products which are bought from the shop can have the logo from the exhibition.

Extra Promotional Material for Exhibition

I have produced these two extra boards showing promotional material for the exhibition,  the first boars show clothing which staff could wear, and also products which could be sold in the exhibition gallery shop. the second board shows advertising for the exhibition, any of these posters could be placed in and around berlin, to show dates and times etc.

Cop Graffiti Publication

Final Publication Photo's

Below are the photographs which I took of my graffiti publication and the additional promotional material/ items. I have tried to take them in the correct lighting, however I have retouched them digitally, as the colour was slightly off. I wanted to capture the Hand stitched sewing on the Publications, as I think it adds a personal touch to it.

When printing my publication, in design wouldn't allow me to print the way I had planned to, so instead of printing on A3 and having a double page speed which would open like a magazine, I ended up having to print in a4 and have the double page speed as a singular one, which I then bound at the top instead of the side. The publication did not turn out the way I wanted it to but still works as a publication.

This booklet shows additional promotion which would go alongside the exhibition, It shows products which could be sold or worn as uniform at the museum as well as advertising for the exhibition itself.
